Aren’t apologies supposed to mean something? Aren’t they a result of realizing a wrong and taking responsibility for it?
In my view the recent public apology from the University of Manitoba for their role in the residential schools issue is a joke. What possibly can they take responsibility for? There is no way anyone at the U of M could ever have known that some who were students there at the time would ultimately become teachers and managers of these schools and would be capable of the horrible treatment they delivered to those they were in charge of.
The motivation of the U of M’s unnecessary apology is still not clear to me. Apparently, I’m not alone in my confusion. This article from the National Post says it all.
